一滴から、
谷は始まる。
Prologue序
山に降った雨は、四十年かけて岩のあいだを抜け、この谷で湧き出します。
雫は、その水の出口に建つ七室だけの宿です。湯も、米も、茶も、同じ水から。ここで過ごす一日は、水が流れる速さで進みます。
Rain that falls on the mountain spends forty years inside the rock before it rises here. Shizuku is seven rooms, built where that water comes out.

到着Arrival
門をくぐると、
音が変わる。
雨上がりの石畳を、行灯の灯りが部屋まで案内します。車の音が届かなくなるのは、門から三十歩目のあたり。そこから先は、川と、ときどき鳥の声だけです。
Thirty steps past the gate, the road is gone. Only the river is left.

湯Onsen
湯気と川霧の、
境目がない。
岩風呂は川面から二メートル。四十二度の源泉を、水も足さず、沸かしもせずに流しています。日が落ちるころ、湯気と川霧の境目がわからなくなります。

内湯は、木曽の檜。
樹齢百二十年の檜を、継ぎ目が見えないように組んだ湯船です。湯があふれるたびに、部屋じゅうが檜の香りになります。

夕餉Dinner
From the valley, in the valley’s water.
谷のものを、谷の水で。

山の七種盛り。蕗、湯葉、岩魚の甘露煮、松葉に刺した銀杏。

岩魚の洗い。湧水でつくった氷の上に。

鮎の塩焼き。囲炉裏の炭で、四十分かけて。

夜Night
灯りを消すと、
星が近い。
谷のまわり十キロに、街灯はひとつもありません。晴れた夜は、テラスに毛布と温かいほうじ茶を用意しておきます。
No street light for ten kilometres. On clear nights we leave blankets and roasted tea on the terrace.
朝Morning
霧が上がるまでの、
一時間。
朝の散歩道は、苔の石段をのぼって湧水の源まで。汲みたての水で、その日最初の煎茶を淹れます。
Up the moss steps to where the water begins, and the first tea of the day.

同じ窓に、四つの季節。

山桜は、谷の上のほうから順に咲いていきます。
青葉に降る雨を、青時雨（あおしぐれ）と呼びます。
楓が色づくのは、谷の底がいちばん遅い。
